Primary School Teacher – currently looking to nanny : Newbury

I am a 21 qualified teacher, currently taking a break from my first year in teaching. I have gained a BA Hons in Primary teaching at Oxford Brookes University. I have also completed a CACHA Diploma in Childcare Level 3 which is the same as NQT L3. I have babysat my nephews since I was 14, the certainty of my career became clear during my work experience in year 11. Being placed in a private nursery confirmed my desire to work with children. Throughout my week I gained practical experience with babies and children, this strengthened my decision to study the CACHE Diploma in childcare. As I am a very “hands on” person I felt that the course would give me practical experiences in a wide range of settings. It certainly did, after my second placement in a year 1 class I was inspired by a superb NQT to choose teaching as a career, which is why I have chosen to study a degree in Teaching at Oxford Brookes University in September. I have developed many attributes which have shaped me and moulded skills which are essential for working with children. I was a member of Rainbows and Brownies. I enjoyed karate and played tag rugby, competing for the county in the Thames Valley Youth Games. I developed a passion for saxophone, gaining a scholarship to play, reaching grade 4. I performed in two bands. During secondary school I was also a Prefect and Peer Mentor for a time. I have been fortunate to have experienced a well rounded childhood with a diversity of experiences to draw from as an adult. My current interests include reading, fiction and non-fiction. I keep up to date by reading a daily newspaper and I am a keen rambler, taking pleasure in the outdoor environment. I have studied at Newbury College, during this time I gained additional knowledge relating to childcare issues. Practical placements were a major focus allowing me to experience a range of skills and working environments. My first placement was at a Private Nursery. Here I was involved with day-to-day childcare including group reading, singing, physical and creative activities. Teamwork was a skill I began to develop as well as becoming aware of the importance of routines and development of children within these. My second placement was in a year one class in a primary school. Here I was given a group of children to work with daily in all curriculum areas. Within this class there were 6 children with special educational needs, varying from behavioural difficulties to autism I was given extensive responsibility and even taught two whole class literacy lessons independently. I was also able to read to the whole class and I assisted the teacher with organising a class assembly. At this placement I gained and developed awareness of special educational needs and developing organisational, interpersonal and communication skills. At my third placement in a Foundation Stage class in another Primary School I performed similar tasks. Although the curriculum was less structured I interacted with the children individually. I created my own healthy eating display with the children and developed the role play area around this, producing a cafe with interactive cross curricular resources. My fourth placement was with a family. There were four boys under the age of four. I worked primarily with the baby, although I also assisted the mum with the others. Due to my reliable and trustworthy nature I have bonded well with the family and have been invited back to babysit the children. I used to work part time at Waitrose in Newbury, in the cafe. I organised tasks using my own initiative and am approachable to customers. Courses I have attended through this job relate to health, safety and hygiene. Sometimes I also had sole charge and supervision of my section. Most recently I have been a temporary Nanny (sole charge) for a family of two children aged 12 months and 26 months. I found this job highly satisfying and felt that it has enstilled the desire to work with children in me. I worked 8am
